And today, U.S. corporations are installing solar energy rapidly as a way to save millions of dollars.  Target led the way with 147.5 MW, with 70 MW installed so far in 2016, while Walmart is using 145.0 MW. Apple 's 93.9 MW and Costco 's 50.7 MW means those companies are also among the top five installers.

Sunlight-powered purifier could clean water for the impoverished

One-tenth of the world’s population lacks clean water. Now, researchers report they have developed a cheap solar still, which uses sunlight to purify dirty water up to four times faster than a current commercial version.   The technology will “allow people to generate their own drinking water much like they generate their own power via solar panels on their house roof".

Las Vegas runs COMPLETELY on renewable energy

From street lights to city parks, community centers and fire stations, all Las Vegas city-run spots are now powered entirely by renewable energy, making it the largest in the U.S. to use such sources. "We are now one of the few cities of the world that can say all the power we use comes from a green source," the city announced.

World's Largest Floating Solar Plant built over former Coal Mine

The world’s largest floating solar power plant is now online in China. The 40MW plant is now afloat in water four to 10 meters deep, and successfully linked to China’s grid. The placement was chosen in large part because the area was previously the location of coal mining operations; and, as a result, the water there is now mineralized and mostly useless. The lake itself was only formed after years of mining operations, the surrounding land collapsed and created a cavity that was filled with rainwater.
